Step-by-step instructions for installing the Ahrefs SEO Toolbar extension on any browser — takes under 3 minutes and the core features are completely free.
Chrome has the largest extension ecosystem and the Ahrefs Toolbar is available directly from the official Chrome Web Store. Always install from there — never from third-party sites.
Navigate to chromewebstore.google.com in Chrome and search for Ahrefs SEO Toolbar. Alternatively, search Google for "Ahrefs toolbar Chrome Web Store" — the official page is listed first. Verify the publisher shows Ahrefs Pte. Ltd. with a verified trader badge.
Click the blue Add to Chrome button on the extension page. A permissions dialog will appear. Ahrefs Toolbar requests access to read and change data on all websites — this is normal and necessary for the on-page audit and link checker features to work. Click Add extension to confirm.
After installing, the Ahrefs icon may be hidden in the extensions menu. Click the puzzle icon (Extensions) in Chrome's top-right toolbar, find Ahrefs SEO Toolbar in the list, and click the pin icon next to it. The Ahrefs "A" icon will now appear permanently in your toolbar.
Navigate to any website — your own or a competitor's. Click the Ahrefs icon in your toolbar to open the on-page SEO report. You'll see the page title, meta description, H1–H6 tags, canonical URL, and robots directives. No account required for this.
Go to addons.mozilla.org and search for Ahrefs SEO Toolbar. Verify the publisher is Ahrefs Pte. Ltd. You can also click the three-bar menu in Firefox → Add-ons and themes → search for Ahrefs.
Click Add to Firefox and confirm the permissions prompt. Firefox will ask for permission to access your data for all websites and to exchange messages with programs other than Firefox.
In Firefox, extensions are managed differently. Right-click the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar to drag the Ahrefs icon into your toolbar. Alternatively access it from the Extensions menu (puzzle icon).
The Safari version is available through the Mac App Store, not the Safari Extension Gallery.
On your Mac, open the Mac App Store and search for Ahrefs SEO Toolbar. The extension is a free download.
Click Get to download. The app will install to your Applications folder and register the Safari extension automatically.
Open Safari → Settings (⌘,) → Extensions tab. Find Ahrefs SEO Toolbar and check the box to enable it. Click Always Allow on Every Website when prompted to enable full functionality.
After installing, visit any webpage and click the Ahrefs icon. The on-page panel will show you:
Title & Meta — length in characters, presence/absence. Headings — H1 through H6 structure. Canonical — the canonical URL the page declares. Robots meta — index/noindex status. Links — total internal and external links on the page. Hreflang — language/country declarations if present.
Click the redirect tracer to see the full redirect chain of any URL. Click the link highlighter to visually mark all links on the page. Use the country switcher to change Google's search location for keyword research.
If you have an Ahrefs subscription ($29/month Starter), signing in to the toolbar unlocks DR, UR, and backlink counts — displayed as a metrics bar on every page and overlaid on Google search results. Click the extension icon → Sign in → enter your Ahrefs credentials.
