Ahrefs Toolbar Not Working?
7 Fixes for Chrome & Firefox

The Ahrefs SEO Toolbar stops working after Chrome updates, extension conflicts, or permission changes. Here are the most effective fixes, in order of how often they resolve the issue.

Covers Chrome & FirefoxFixes for 2026
Quick Fixes — Try in Order
  1. Disable and re-enable the extension
  2. Update Chrome or Firefox
  3. Check extension permissions
  4. Clear extension storage
  5. Check for conflicts with other extensions
  6. Uninstall and reinstall
  7. Check Ahrefs account status

Fix 1: Disable and Re-enable (Most Common Fix)

This resolves the majority of cases where the toolbar silently breaks after a Chrome or extension update.

1

Go to chrome://extensions

Type chrome://extensions in the address bar.

2

Toggle Ahrefs SEO Toolbar off

Click the toggle to disable it. Wait 5 seconds.

3

Toggle it back on

Re-enable the extension, then reload the page you were on. The toolbar should work again.

Fix 2: Update Chrome or Firefox

Ahrefs Toolbar regularly updates to stay compatible with the latest browser versions. If your browser is outdated, the extension may break silently.

Chrome: Click the three-dot menu → Help → About Google Chrome. Chrome will check for updates and install them automatically. Relaunch when prompted.

Firefox: Click the three-bar menu → Help → About Firefox. Firefox checks for updates on open and installs them automatically.

Fix 3: Check Extension Permissions

Chrome sometimes reverts extension permissions after updates. If the toolbar shows a warning or stops loading on specific sites:

1

Click the Ahrefs icon in your toolbar

If you see a warning about permissions, click it.

2

Grant site access

The extension may be set to "On click" instead of "On all sites". Click the Ahrefs icon → the three-dot menu next to it → select Always allow on all sites.

Fix 4: Clear Extension Storage

Corrupted stored data can cause the toolbar to show wrong data or fail to load metrics.

1

Open chrome://extensions

Navigate to chrome://extensions in Chrome.

2

Click "Details" on Ahrefs SEO Toolbar

Click the Details button on the Ahrefs SEO Toolbar card.

3

Click "Clear storage"

Scroll down to find Extension storage and click Clear storage. This resets all extension data. If you were signed into Ahrefs, you'll need to sign in again.

⚠ Clearing storage resets all toolbar settings to defaults. Reconnect your Ahrefs account after this if you have a paid subscription.

Fix 5: Disable Other Extensions Temporarily

Extensions can conflict with each other. Ad blockers (uBlock Origin), VPNs, and other SEO toolbars (SEOquake, MozBar) are the most common culprits.

Go to chrome://extensions and disable all other extensions. Reload Google and check if Ahrefs Toolbar works. If it does, re-enable extensions one by one to identify the conflict.

Fix 6: Uninstall and Reinstall

If none of the above work, a clean reinstall usually resolves persistent issues.

1

Right-click the Ahrefs icon → Remove from Chrome

Or go to chrome://extensions → click Remove on the Ahrefs card.

2

Restart Chrome

Fully close and reopen Chrome after uninstalling.

3

Reinstall from the Chrome Web Store

Go to the Chrome Web Store, search for Ahrefs SEO Toolbar, and reinstall. See our install guide for details.

Fix 7: Check Ahrefs Account Status

If the toolbar loads but shows no DR/UR metrics or backlink data, the issue is account-related rather than a bug:

Note: The free features (on-page audit, redirect tracer, link checker) do NOT require an Ahrefs account. Only DR/UR backlink metrics require a paid subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common causes: Chrome needs updating, the extension was disabled after a browser update, or there is a conflict with another extension. Start with Fix 1 (disable/re-enable) and Fix 2 (update Chrome) — these resolve 80% of reported issues.
Go to chrome://extensions → Details on Ahrefs SEO Toolbar → Clear storage. This resets all extension data to defaults. You'll need to sign into Ahrefs again if you had a paid account connected.
If the on-page panel opens but shows nothing: the page may be loading over HTTP (try HTTPS), or the extension doesn't have permission for that site. If DR/UR metrics are blank: you need a paid Ahrefs account — the free version does not show these metrics.
Firefox fix: go to Menu → Add-ons and themes → Extensions → find Ahrefs SEO Toolbar → click the three dots → Remove. Then reinstall from addons.mozilla.org. If the extension had permission issues, re-granting permissions during reinstall usually resolves them.
